Perched At Wehr's Dam ...

This Great Blue Heron may well be contemplating how fast the summer flew by while perched at the historic Wehr's Dam on a late September afternoon.

The dam, built in 1904, is next to Wehr's Covered Bridge, which dates back to 1841, at Covered Bridge Park, Orefield, Pennsylvania.

A Hint Of Shangri-La ...

"Your kisses take me to
Shangri-la ...
A land of bluebirds and fountains ...
For anywhere you are is Shangri-La."
                                    ~ "Shangri-La"
~ Carl Sigman, Matty Malneck and Robert Maxwell
                                                                   1946

With the Jordan Creek gently flowing under a sparkling
September sun, it seems like Shangri-La on a late summer
afternoon at Trexler Nature Preserve, Schnecksville, Pennsylvania.
The historic Schlicher Covered Bridge is in the background.
It is a wooden, 108-foot-long Burr Truss Bridge constructed in 1882.
It has vertical plank siding and a gable roof. It recently reopened
after needed restorations.

The Summer Wanes ...

"The summer knows ...
one last caress
it's time to dress for fall ..."
      ~ "The Summer Knows,"
           Theme from "Summer of '42"
                ~ Michael Legrand, 1971

Bright pails, a melancholy mood ...
A few autumn leaves scatter around pails
left behind by children catching tadpoles
in the Jordan Creek at Trexler Nature Preserve,
Schnecksville, Pennsylvania.
On this September afternoon it reminded me
the waning summer will soon give way to fall.

Bridging Twilight ...

"Twilight drops her curtain down and pins it with a star."
            ~ Lucy Maud Montgomery
                   ~ 1874-1942
Twilight begins to steal across the waning summer sky like a painter of dreams over Easton, Pennsylvania as viewed from across
the Delaware River in Phillipsburg, New Jersey next to the historic Northampton Street Bridge, commonly called The Free Bridge.

The bridge that spans the states was completed in 1896 and survived damage from massive flooding from Hurricane Diane in 1955. It underwent a thorough restoration in 1990, and is one of my very favorite places to photograph.

Light of Innocence

"It's never too late to have a happy childhood."
                                                                 ~ Tom Robbins

These two sisters were filled with the innocent joy of childhood seeing the ducks earlier this week at Monocacy Park, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Of Glory In The Flower ...

"Though nothing can bring back the hour
of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not,
rather find strength in what remains behind ..."

~ William Wordsworth, "Ode: Intimations of Immortality
                                     from Recollections of Early Childhood"

When I saw these flowers planted near the Saucon Rail Trail, Hellertown, Pennsylvania in the waning days of summer last week, it reminded me of these lines from my favorite poem.

They Call Me Sunny

" Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you."
                                                                  ~ Nathaniel Hawthorne

This yellow butterfly looked like a little burst of sunshine on wings last week on the Saucon Rail Trail, Hellertown, Pennsylvania.

Running On Innocence

"No matter what happens, always keep your childhood innocence. It's the most important thing." ~ Federico Fellini

When I saw this little girl running to see the ducks today at Monocacy Park, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, it reminded me of a snapshot of the joy of childhood innocence.

Red Grace

I always love the sight of a country church, and liked the contrast of the red against the blue sky earlier this week at Zion's Red Church, Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania. The church was established in 1755.

When Sunny Gets Blue ...

When I saw this little wildflower basking in the sun a few days ago on the Saucon Rail Trail, Hellertown, Pennsylvania, it brought to mind that great Nat King Cole song,
"When Sunny Gets Blue."

Goodnight, Summer

" When summer gathers up her robes of glory, and, like a dream, glides away."
                                                               ~ Sarah Helen Whitman

A beautiful spot of the  Saucon Creek in the waning summer a few days ago. The creek runs along the Saucon Rail Trail, Hellertown, Pennsylvania.

And That's Love ...

"Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be ..."
                                                               ~ Robert Browning

It warmed my heart to see this scene yesterday on the Saucon Rail Trail, Hellertown, Pennsylvania.

Living In The Light

"Love is like a butterfly. It goes where it pleases and pleases wherever it goes."
                                                                          ~ Author Unknown

Yellow butterfly is illuminated in the late summer light this afternoon on the Saucon Rail Trail, Hellertown, Pennsylvania.

Paint It Red !

"I love red so much that I almost want to paint everything red."
                          ~ Alexander Calder, American sculptor

Wild red berries shine in the September sun yesterday at Trexler Memorial Park, Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Blue Meets Gold

"Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul." ~ John Muir

Goldenrod reaches for the waning summer sky today at Trexler Memorial Park, Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Try To Remember ...

"Try to remember the kind of September ..."
                                                                  ~ The Fantasticks

I loved the expressions on the faces of this family, especially the youngest boy, this evening at Trexler Memorial Park, Allentown, Pennsylania as they watched the ducks in the pond. Brought to mind that great song from The Fantasticks as this family seemed to be enjoying a simple yet wonderful September evening.
