Shank Of The Evening ...

It’s the shank of the evening! But when is that, exactly? This phrase typically suggests that the night is far from over, shank being an old word for something, straight, or the tail end of something. But as the Dictionary of American Regional English notes, in the South, evening is considered “the time between late afternoon and dusk.”

The lyrics “In the shank of the night,
When the doins’ are right
Well you can tell 'em I’ll be there …” are part of “In the Cool, Cool, Cool of The Evening,” music by Hoagy Carmichael & lyrics by Johnny Mercer, 1951

It’s the shank of the evening as the moon is illuminated by the last hues of the setting summer sun as the sky segues to twilight on July 1, 2020 at Trexler Memorial Park, Allentown, Pennsylvania.

I just love the phrase “shank of the evening,” and was very happy to take a photo that showcases it!

Raining Retro ...

"There's a certain nostalgia and romance in a place you left."
~ author David Guterson, born 1956

Diners ... a favorite of locals and weary travelers, sharing their
joys and sorrows over a steaming cup of coffee. Diners are
a comforting haven, a slice of nostalgia to go with that slice
of cherry pie, especially on a rainy evening.

Here, the Hamilton Family Restaurant (known as the "Ham Fam"),
a '50s era landmark in the West End of Allentown, Pennsylvania, beams
it's retro neon welcome during a rainy September twilight.

Trimmed In Twilight ...

"Sweet memories of ... twilights trimmed in purple haze
And laughing eyes and simple ways
And quiet nights and gentle days with you
Memories, pressed between the pages of
my mind ..."

                       ~ "Memories"
~ recorded by the great Elvis Presley
                                                                                                                    ~ 1968

Twilight trims the spring sky over Easton, Pennsylvania as viewed from across the Delaware River in Phillipsburg, New Jersey next to the historic Northampton Street Bridge, commonly called The Free Bridge.

The bridge that spans the states was completed in 1896 and survived massive flooding from Hurricane Diane in 1955.

It underwent a thorough restoration in 1990 and is one of my very favorite places to photograph.

Bridging Twilight ...

"Twilight drops her curtain down and pins it with a star."
            ~ Lucy Maud Montgomery
                   ~ 1874-1942
Twilight begins to steal across the waning summer sky like a painter of dreams over Easton, Pennsylvania as viewed from across
the Delaware River in Phillipsburg, New Jersey next to the historic Northampton Street Bridge, commonly called The Free Bridge.

The bridge that spans the states was completed in 1896 and survived damage from massive flooding from Hurricane Diane in 1955. It underwent a thorough restoration in 1990, and is one of my very favorite places to photograph.

Deep Purple Dreams ...

"When the deep purple falls ...
through the mist of a memory
you wander back to me ...
here in my deep purple dreams."

                       ~ "Deep Purple"
~ composed by Peter DeRose, 1933
~ lyrics by Mitchell Parish, 1938

Twilight sweeps across the summer sky
like deep purple dreams at
Trexler Memorial Park, Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Pony Bridge Bejeweled for Christmas

The Walnut Street "Pony" Bridge, built in 1860, is the last remaining cast and wrought iron bridge in North America.
