The Red House Along The Autumn Canal ...

The historic Harry Rickert House reflects in the Lehigh Canal on a beautiful autumn afternoon in early November along the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor (D&L Trail), Weissport, Pennsylvania, where the trail is positioned between the Lehigh River and Lehigh Canal.

Weissport flourished as a Lehigh Canal town until 1942. Diverse goods, coal and people moved along the waterway. Boatyards and a mercantile center in the Harry Rickert House anchored business activity here.

The house itself was built just after the canal was dug and built in 1828. Jacob K. Rickert came to Weissport in the 1850s, and through his son Hiram and grandson Harry, the Rickert’s business continued to operate until the 1950s. Today the stately building is owned by Rod and Jennifer Mann. The house is their home plus a guest house known as “The Canal Side Guest House.”

Running from Wilkes-Barre to Bristol, the D&L Trail passes through the Lehigh and Delaware rivers and their canals in Pennsylvania.

The Bridge That Carried You Over ...

 A car begins to cross the Glendon Hill Road River Bridge, Easton, Pennsylvania, which carries it over the Lehigh River on a bright and beautiful late spring afternoon that feels like a bridge to summer in this high contrast monochrome shot I captured in early June.

Built circa 1935 and rehabilitated in 2012, this three-span, 357 foot long, riveted steel Pratt through truss bridge carries one lane of traffic and a sidewalk over the Lehigh River and is one of the entrances to Hugh Moore Park, site of a trailhead of the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor (D&L Trail.)

Hugh Moore Park is a City of Easton park, located between the Lehigh River and the Lehigh Canal. The park was once home to the first industrial park in the United States and is now home to the National Canal Museum, Josiah White II canal boat, and Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor offices.

Glendon was originally formed as a part of Williams Township, and was incorporated as a borough December 18, 1867.

Tiger Wings ...

Though this papillon has orange and black coloring, this is not a tiger, but an Eastern Comma Butterfly.

This beauty alights on an early June afternoon along the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor (D&L Trail) at Lehigh Gap.

In the shadow of the Kittatinny Ridge, also called Blue Mountain, the Lehigh Gap in Slatington, Pennsylvania, is a crossroads where the Lehigh Gap Nature Center’s trails connect two historic trails – the Appalachian Trail and the Delaware and the D&L Trail.

The Appalachian Trail, a foot path, follows the ridge on both sides of the Lehigh Gap, running 1,245 miles south to Georgia and 930 miles north to Maine. Running from Wilkes-Barre to Bristol, the D&L Trail passes through the Lehigh and Delaware rivers and their canals in Pennsylvania.
